On May 5, 2025, the Met Gala transformed into a vibrant tribute to Black style with the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." This edition spotlighted Black dandyism, an aesthetic blending elegance, resilience, and a sense of identity.

A Landmark Exhibition: "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style"

Organized by the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" explores three centuries of Black fashion through the lens of dandyism. Curated by Andrew Bolton and Monica L. Miller, it features clothing, accessories, and artwork illustrating how style has served as a tool of resistance and expression for Black people throughout the Atlantic diaspora. The event was co-chaired by influential figures such as Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Colman Domingo, and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as honorary chair. The "Tailored for You" dress code invited guests to interpret the theme through tailored outfits that reflected their identities.

Striking Style Tributes

- Zendaya evoked Bianca Jagger with a white Burberry suit,

- Quinta Brunson and Megan Thee Stallion honored Josephine Baker,

- Keke Palmer was inspired by Dorothy Dandridge,

- Diana Ross wore a creation reminiscent of her role in Mahogany,

- Ava DuVernay paid tribute to her great-grandmother, Annie Fisher.

I must say, the men outdid themselves; I was impressed by the outfits of Khaby Lame, Damson Idris, and André 3000, who wore a piano as a backpack. Pharrell Williams, as co-chair, made a statement with a double-breasted jacket adorned with 100,000 pearls, which he designed himself for Louis Vuitton. This piece, requiring 980 hours of work, perfectly embodied the theme of Black dandyism.

I should add that I really liked Hailey Bieber's outfit. I probably would have added a pocket watch and a hat to mark the occasion.

A Historic Recognition

This edition of the Met Gala was the first to focus exclusively on Black designers, highlighting the importance of style in shaping Black identities. The event raised $31 million for the Costume Institute (Met Museum), a historic record.

The 2025 Met Gala celebrated Black style not only as an aesthetic expression, but also as an act of resistance and identity. It was a memorable evening that honored African American heritage and history.
